A European Buyer's AmericanEdge Order Sat at Awaiting Payment
Buying knives while traveling is a specific kind of logistical gamble, and a recent r/knifeclub post lays out almost every way it can go wrong. A buyer from Europe, in the United States for a week, ordered a knife from AmericanEdge and paid for express shipping because the delivery window to his hotel was only five or six days.
Payment went through ApplePay on his end. The order status at the retailer, however, still read “awaiting payment.” He had emailed, sent a text message that registered as delivered because it went through as an iMessage, and called and reached voicemail. His own explanation for the silence is the part dealers should pay attention to: he is using an overseas phone number, and a retailer receiving an international number asking about a payment discrepancy is a reasonable candidate for a phishing or vishing attempt, so the messages may have been ignored rather than missed.
The technical explanation is probably mundane. ApplePay transactions occasionally settle differently than card payments, and a mismatch between what the payment processor reports and what the store's order system records is a known failure mode. The result is an order that is fully paid from the customer's perspective and not paid at all from the retailer's, sitting in a queue that nobody has a reason to look at until the customer complains loudly enough.
For buyers, the lessons are practical: use a payment method the retailer can reconcile instantly when shipping to a temporary address, keep the transaction confirmation, and start with a phone call rather than a text. For retailers, a support channel that cannot distinguish a legitimate overseas customer from a scammer is a real cost, because the customer in this story did everything right and still needed a community forum to get a response.
Verdict: no indication of wrongdoing by either side, just a payment reconciliation gap colliding with a one-week window. The clock was always going to be the real problem here.
