A Vosteed Nymble Corroded in a Boatyard, and the Owner Is Being Fair About It

VosteedOctober 4, 2026Source: r/knives

A r/knives post on October 4 showed corrosion on a Vosteed Nymble in Elmax, and the owner went out of his way to be fair about the conditions. He works in a boatyard, lives on a boat on the southeast coast of the United States, and has carried the knife every day for a couple of weeks in hot, humid and sweaty conditions. He still likes the knife and its performance, and said he is only a little disappointed in the stainless properties of this particular example.

That caveat is what makes the post useful, because the reaction to any corrosion photograph is usually a blanket verdict on a steel. Elmax is a powder-metallurgy stainless developed by Bohler-Uddeholm with roughly 18 per cent chromium and a high vanadium content, and on paper it is one of the more corrosion-resistant tool steels available. What the paper does not capture is that corrosion resistance in a knife depends on three things beyond the alloy: the heat treatment, the surface finish, and the chloride exposure. A highly polished blade resists pitting better than a stonewashed one because there is less surface area for chlorides to cling to. A boatyard is a salt-laden environment where even genuinely stainless alloys eventually show spotting if they are not rinsed and oiled.

The failure mode described is also the diagnostic. Surface rust or spotting is an environmental issue that wiping with oil and a mild abrasive will resolve. Pitting, where material is removed and the surface erodes, suggests something more concerning about the specific blade. The owner called it corrosion rather than rust and said he was disappointed in the stainless properties, which points toward the milder end, but the photograph is the only way to know.

The fair conclusion is not that Elmax is bad steel. It is that no knife steel is maintenance-free in a saltwater workplace, and a knife carried every day in that environment should be rinsed and oiled weekly.

Verdict: if you work in a marine or coastal environment, choose a highly corrosion-resistant steel with a polished finish and get into the habit of a weekly wipe-down. If you already own a Vosteed Nymble and it has spotted, clean it, oil it, and keep carrying it. This is a maintenance lesson, not a product failure. Shop Vosteed โ†’
