Bestech Nyrrdreki BT2607: Fabian Hobbelen's M390 Cleaver Folder Opens With a Button Bolster Lock

Bestech has spent the year recruiting outside talent, and its newest signing is coming out swinging. Fabian Hobbelen's first model for the brand is the Nyrrdreki, a cleaver-profile folder that turns the most theatrical blade shape in EDC into a practical daily cutter. It is available now in four handle flavors, starting at $272, and the details show a designer who clearly studied what makes the cleaver work as an everyday carry rather than a novelty.

The blade is the showpiece. The Nyrrdreki carries 3.08 inches of M390 at 60-61 HRC with a hollow grind โ€” a blade height and stepped opening cutout that give it serious stage presence, plus the classic cleaver hole that doubles as a thumb deployment point. M390 is the right steel for a knife that will actually get used: top-shelf wear resistance, easy-to-maintain edge stability, and corrosion resistance that keeps a big-bellied blade looking sharp. Openers include the thumb hole, a front flipper, and a pinky-flip through the hole, so there is no wrong way to deploy it.

The lock is the engineering story. The Nyrrdreki uses a button bolster lock โ€” a button on the show side disengages what is essentially a frame lock concealed beneath the off-side scale. It gives the clean, uncluttered lock side of a framelock with the easy one-hand release of a button, and it is executed on a titanium bolster frame. Around that core, the handle offers room for a full four-finger grip, with scale options running from natural canvas Micarta to G10, shipwreck Camo Carbon, and a dark-matter-gold FatCarbon โ€” the last one giving the knife a distinctly premium finish.

Weight lands just under four ounces depending on the scale material, which is respectable for a knife with this much blade personality. Blue titanium accents on the clip, backspacer, and pivot collar tie the BT2607A Micarta version together, and the whole package closes to a pocket-friendly 3.96 inches. Against other M390 cleaver folders, the Nyrrdreki's $272 opening price undercuts most of the competition by a wide margin โ€” cleavers with this steel and this fit-and-finish usually start closer to $350.

For anyone who has ever looked at a cleaver folder and wondered whether it could actually replace a drop point, the Nyrrdreki is a compelling yes. New designer, proven steel, and a lock mechanism worth talking about โ€” Hobbelen's Bestech debut lands with intent.
