Buck's Frontiersman Sport Is Stealth Run #15: Cru-Wear, Removable Micarta, and a 1,000-Piece Limit

Buck's Stealth Run program has become one of the most consistent sources of limited-edition excitement in the knife world, and release number fifteen is a brand-new take on a long-running fixed-blade favorite. The 124 Frontiersman Sport updates the storied original with modern materials and a distinctly stealthy aesthetic — the kind of release that rewards the collectors who follow the program run by run.

The changes start at the edge. Buck elongated the blade by about a quarter of an inch to 6.5 inches total and converted the profile to a full flat grind with a straight clip point — a geometry change that improves slicing performance compared with the standard model. More importantly, the steel has made a serious leap: the Sport runs Cru-Wear, a semi-stainless tool steel known for excellent toughness and edge retention, with Buck's Paul Bos heat treat and a full black Cerakote finish. The Cerakote effectively neutralizes the corrosion concerns that come with a semi-stainless, giving the Sport real-world behavior closer to a stainless blade.

The handle carries forward the Frontiersman's signature design but dresses it in removable modern materials. The Micarta scales come off, and so does the pommel, which — like the guard — is machined from black Cerakoted aluminum. Black nitride fasteners complete the stealth look. The material swap pays off on the scale: the Sport weighs in at 10.3 ounces versus 13.3 for the original 124, a meaningful difference for a knife meant to ride on a belt or in a pack.

Released as part of the 2026 Project Stealth and timed to celebrate National Knife Day, the Frontiersman Sport is strictly limited to 1,000 pieces, and it ships with a black leather sheath befitting the run's premium positioning. For collectors, the appeal is obvious — a numbered limited run of a heritage model with upgraded steel and a full flat grind. For practical buyers, the removable scales and 3-ounce weight savings make it a genuinely better carry than the model it descends from.

Buck's Stealth Run series has built a faithful following by balancing heritage and modernization, and the Frontiersman Sport might be the strongest example yet. At a thousand pieces, the window to grab one is narrow.
