Shopping sales is more fun when items that are already highly affordable get a price cut, and Casio's AE-1200 — nicknamed the "Casio Royale" by fans — has just dipped below its already-aggressive floor. Every once in a while, the watch drops below $30 (it usually retails for around $40 at Casio's own site). Today is one of those days: Walmart has the AE-1200 listed at $20 online, marking one of its lowest prices ever for a watch that already lives at the bottom of the digital-watch price chart.
The AE-1200 is one of Casio's most recognizable digital watches. It was introduced in 2012, but its visual language is deliberately rooted in the brand's 1980s models — specifically the 1986 AE-200 "Twin Graph" and the 1987 W-50U. The "Royale" nickname comes from the watch's resemblance to the fictional timepiece worn by Roger Moore's James Bond in 1983's Octopussy — a working version of that actual Seiko G757 Sports 100 now fetches a few hundred dollars on eBay, which says something about how far a Casio homage can carry a watch's identity. The AE-1200 gives buyers that distinctive four-screen layout with a 100-year calendar, world time, daily alarm, stopwatch, and 100-meter water resistance.
The honest caveat is that a $20 watch is a $20 watch. The resin case and acrylic crystal will scratch more easily than a sapphire-equipped G-Shock, and the module is functional rather than premium. None of that changes what the AE-1200 actually is: a working, recognizable, durable digital watch with the most distinctive layout in Casio's catalog. The watch is also worth owning in any colorway — black, silver, and a few limited combinations — so the only real decision is whether to buy one now at the floor price or wait for the next dip.
Compared with the G-Shock line, the AE-1200 sacrifices shock resistance and a tougher build for a much lower price and the Octopussy-inspired silhouette. Compared with the original Seiko G757 Sports 100, it offers 90 percent of the look at less than 10 percent of the price. At $20 on Walmart, this is one of those rare sales where the watch was already a value and the discount makes it a no-brainer.
