Jack Mason Canton Day-Date: The King of Affordable Rolex Vibes Tackles the President

With its move from fashion brand to bona fide enthusiast favorite, Texas watchmaker Jack Mason has gained a reputation around these parts as the “King of Affordable Rolex Vibes.” The brand's Strat-o-timer is a “true” GMT alternative to the GMT-Master II, the Strat-o-timer Frontier fills the same role for the Explorer II, and the classy Canton is basically a budget Datejust. Now, Jack Mason is using the Crown as its muse once again with what it calls its most impressive watch to date: the Canton Day-Date.

The new Canton Day-Date is to the Canton what the Rolex Day-Date — aka the President — is to the Datejust. And like the Day-Date, which is available exclusively in precious metal, Jack Mason did more than simply add a day complication to make the Day-Date feel extra special. The biggest upgrade outside of the addition of a full-day display above 12 o'clock is the new guilloché dial. Rather than going with a simple stamped dial, the Canton Day-Date's radial dial pattern is milled line by line — a more intricate and time-consuming process, and the proof is in the pudding: the pattern catches light in a way stamped dials cannot replicate.

In addition to the new pattern, the Canton Day-Date adds a magnifier over the date window at 6 o'clock. Unlike the Rolex's iconic Cyclops date magnifier, the Canton's is round and is applied on the underside of the sapphire crystal, making it less obtrusive. The stainless-steel case, while stylistically identical to the Canton's smooth, polished bezel, has been upsized to 41mm — the same diameter as Rolex's larger Day-Date. Unlike the Rolex, however, the Jack Mason has a sapphire caseback revealing the Top-Grade, Swiss-made Sellita Calibre SW240-1, and it is assembled and regulated by hand in the US.

Compared with the Canton, the Day-Date adds the full-day display, the guilloché dial, and the upsized case while keeping the same tapering Oyster-style bracelet with polished center links — no Presidential bracelet here — and the same 150m water resistance. Compared with an actual Rolex Day-Date, you are getting the visual language at a fraction of the price, with the honest trade-offs being the Sellita movement, the steel (not precious metal) case, and the lack of the Crown on the dial.

Available at launch in three colorways — Slate, a light blue; Lagoon, a deep teal; and Chocolate, a rich brown with gold-tone accents — the Canton Day-Date is the strongest argument yet that Jack Mason has earned its nickname. If you have been admiring the Day-Date look from afar, this is the most affordable way to wear it.
