r/Knife_Swap Tightens the Rules: Incomplete Descriptions Now Come With Refund Consequences

Every active marketplace eventually hits the same wall: the sellers who post a knife, a timestamp, and almost nothing else. This week r/Knife_Swap's moderators announced they are done tolerating it. In a META post titled "Starting Now, We Will Be Cracking Down On Descriptions," the mod team laid out both the new enforcement posture and the financial teeth behind it — sellers who fail to describe their knives adequately may now be on the hook for partial refunds when buyers receive knives with undisclosed wear.

The required description checklist is comprehensive: edge condition, number of owners, centering and lockup, body condition, box and papers, modifications, blade steel, and whether the knife has been disassembled. That last one matters in a community that routinely tunes, mods, and scale-swaps its knives before flipping them. The mods note they will handle cases individually, but the direction is unambiguous: if a buyer reports wear that was never described, the seller may be asked to make it right financially.

The second half of the post targets a specific workaround: group descriptions. Listing six knives and writing "this description applies to all unless otherwise noted" is, per the mods, "borderline acceptable" — acceptable only when every knife is genuinely identical in condition. Once knives diverge in ownership history, sharpening status, or ding placement, the mods want individual descriptions, because a generic "all have wear" does not actually protect anyone when one knife has dramatically more wear than the others.

The announcement has the classic texture of marketplace growing pains. r/Knife_Swap runs on trust between strangers — payments are often Friends-and-Family, with no buyer protection in the traditional sense — which means descriptions are effectively the entire contract. When that contract gets sloppy, disputes multiply, and the mods end up as unpaid arbiters. Cracking down on inputs is their way of reducing outputs.

For sellers, the message is simple: describe it like you will be held to it, because now you will be. For buyers, it is a small victory in the eternal war between convenience and caveat emptor.
