Rumor: Benchmade Developing New Mini Freek with MagnaCut and G10

Unnamed industry sources have tipped off several knife media outlets that Benchmade is developing a Mini Freek variant with textured G10 handle scales and CPM-MagnaCut blade steel, targeting a price point under $200. The Mini Freek, part of Benchmade's hunting and outdoor series, has been a solid seller since its launch but has primarily been available with a rubberized handle and S30V steel.

If the rumors are accurate, the G10/MagnaCut Mini Freek would represent Benchmade's most aggressively priced MagnaCut model. Other Benchmade MagnaCut offerings include the Bugout ($220), the 940 ($280), and the Adamas ($250) — all priced above $200. A sub-$200 MagnaCut Benchmade would be a direct challenge to the Spyderco Para 3 LW MagnaCut ($158) and the TRM Neutron 2 configurable ($135-215).

The Mini Freek's 3-inch drop point blade is a well-regarded EDC shape, and the AXIS lock mechanism is Benchmade's most popular feature. Combining that with G10 scales (which many users prefer over the current rubberized version) and MagnaCut steel could make the Mini Freek one of the most compelling Benchmades in recent memory.

Benchmade has not officially commented on the rumors, but the company's pattern of releasing G10 variants of popular models (the Bugout G10, the 940 G10) lends credibility to the speculation. A summer or early fall announcement is expected.

Verdict: A sub-$200 MagnaCut Mini Freek would be a major release from Benchmade. Keep an eye on this one if you prefer American-made knives with premium materials.
