Timex Retroware Digital: A Futuristic Digital From the '80s That Never Was

TimexAugust 4, 2026Source: Gear Patrol

Unlike Casio's repertoire of throwback timepieces, Timex's catalog often bucks familiarity in favor of raising eyebrows. That tendency has produced reissues like the uber-simple SSQ, the futuristic LCA, and the obscure 1972 Time Machine — but with its latest effort, the watchmaker skips the reissue route entirely and creates a brand-new reference that looks like it escaped from a '80s sci-fi movie: the Retroware Digital.

As opposed to Timex's slew of Q Timex revivals, the Retroware Digital is an original model that pastiches old-school digital sports watches. The parking meter case shape is reminiscent of the brand's own retro-digital heritage, giving it an instant vintage silhouette that reads as familiar even though the watch itself has never existed before. It's a clever trick: borrow the visual language of a beloved era without being bound by an actual historical model.

The digital display here is rather unique. Instead of a traditional segmented readout, Timex opts for large, curvy numerals that dominate the dial — a goofy, characterful choice that takes some getting used to, but that's precisely the point. It's a playful time display that recalls the seconds counter on Fossil's '90s ana-digi icon, the Big Tic, while the lower third of the dial adds even more information. Running on a battery-powered quartz movement, it's a no-fuss digital that leans entirely on personality.

Compared to the current digital watch boom — which has mostly meant Casio reissuing G-Shocks and vintage digitals at every price point — Timex's approach stands out by inventing rather than reissuing. Where Casio leans on heritage and nostalgia for existing models, the Retroware Digital creates nostalgia for a watch that never existed, which is a much harder trick to pull off. For collectors tired of seeing the same five reissued references everywhere, that originality is the appeal.

The Verdict: The Retroware Digital is Timex at its most playful — an original retro-futuristic digital with real personality, for anyone who wants their wrist game to stand out from the reissue crowd.
