ZT's 0452BLUCF Brings MagnaCut to a Sinkevich Flipper
Zero Tolerance's 0452 is one of those designs that refuses to age out. Dmitry Sinkevich's long, slender flipper has been in the catalog for years, and a photo of the 0452BLUCF in MagnaCut posted to r/knifeclub this week drew the kind of response most new releases would envy. No drama, no controversy — just people recognizing a shape that still looks right.
The appeal is geometry. The 0452 pattern is long and narrow, with a blade that runs close to four inches and a handle that stays slim, which puts it in a class of large flippers that do not feel like bricks. Add a carbon-fiber handle and a flipper tab, and you get a knife that is meant to be looked at as much as used. The BLUCF designation points to the blue-and-carbon-fiber variant, and the MagnaCut blade is the modern upgrade over the S35VN the platform was originally built around.
MagnaCut is the right steel for this knife, and not only for marketing. Larrin Thomas's recipe delivers a combination of toughness, edge retention and corrosion resistance that suits a large thin blade used for slicing rather than chopping, and it responds well to ordinary sharpening. On a knife this long, corrosion resistance matters more than on a small folder, because a thin blade that pits loses its geometry fast.
The comparison is with the current ZT lineup. The new 0316 and 0512DL are overbuilt Cru-Wear knives aimed at hard use, while the 0452 is a carry-and-admire design with a flipper action and a pocket clip that expects a dressier pocket. Both approaches are legitimate; they simply answer different questions, and the fact that ZT keeps both in the catalog says something about how broad its customer base has become.
Verdict: if you want a Sinkevich flipper and you have been waiting for a MagnaCut version, this is the one to find. If you want a knife to work with, the smaller ZTs will take more abuse and cost less to replace.
