A Knifeclub Regular Discovers Why the Demko AD20 Has a Cult
Every few months r/knifeclub produces a thread that reads like a conversion story, and this week's is about the Demko AD20. The poster, a self-identified back-lock loyalist, opened with a confession: after years of trusting Demko's Triad Lock above everything else, the Shark Lock on the AD20 "now takes the cake." The reasoning was not strength claims or torture tests but the two things the community actually argues about โ fidget factor and smoothness.
The Shark Lock is Andrew Demko's take on a crossbar-style mechanism, with a sliding shark-fin tab that you pull back to release. It is ambidextrous, fully ambidextrous in practice rather than on paper, and it locks up solidly enough that the poster compared the knife to a bank vault. Comments backed him up: one owner called the slicer-clip version of the AD20 an "absolute work horse pocket hog" that performs better than most of his premium knives "at a fraction of the cost and pocket space."
That last phrase is the interesting part of the AD20's reputation. The knife is not cheap โ the base models run well past $400 and the premium variants go far higher โ but the people who carry one tend to compare it to $900 custom pieces rather than to a Benchmade. The Demko design language, with its thick blade stock and tall flat grind, is deliberately overbuilt, and that is precisely what its fans want.
What the thread illustrates is a shift in what the community values. A decade ago the argument was steel: S30V versus M390 versus Elmax. Today the differentiators that get people to spend four figures are the lock, the action, and whether the knife makes you want to open it fifty times a day. Demko's Shark Lock sits at the intersection of all three, which is why the AD20 has held its resale value while plenty of prettier knives have not.
Verdict: if you have dismissed the AD20 as expensive hyped-up titanium, the thread is a fair counterargument โ the lock is genuinely different in hand, and the people who own one rarely sell it. If you want the same mechanism without the price, Demko's own production line and the AD20.5 are the usual entry point, and they have the same fan base for the same reason.
