An EDC That Saved a Life: An r/EDC Member Uses His Narcan After Years of Carrying It
Most EDC posts are about gear: which flashlight, which knife, which wallet. This week r/EDC got a post about something heavier — the night years of consistent carry finally paid off in the most important way possible. The title says it all: "Always carried, never used, until the other night." The author, heading home from a meeting around 9 p.m., pulled up to a stop sign and saw a shirtless man lying motionless next to a bicycle on the sidewalk.
What followed was a textbook emergency response executed with pocket gear. Two good Samaritans were already there; one was on the phone with 911, the other panicking because the man's chest wasn't moving. The author checked pupils with his Surefire E1D backup light — "the most pinned I've ever seen" — found a faint distal pulse, tried sternal rubbing and a response check, and got nothing. Then he administered the Narcan he had carried for years, down the man's right nostril. About 20 seconds later, the man's eyes began moving behind his eyelids.
He opened them and asked, "Who are you?" His name was Jimmy. The author introduced himself, stayed until EMTs and police arrived four or five minutes later, gave his statement, and left Jimmy in medical hands. The post ends with the part that explains everything: "I lost my best friend to an overdose five years ago... in some sort of way I guess I did [do the same for her]. Take care of each other gang."

EDC culture is often dismissed as consumerism, and sometimes it is. But this thread is the counterweight: a consistent carry, maintained in good working order for years, that happened to be exactly what one stranger needed on one specific night. Carry what you carry, the community seems to agree — but consider carrying something that can save a life.
