Benchmade's Mini SOCP Folder Turns a Fixed Blade Into a Configurable EDC

BenchmadeOctober 18, 2026Source: KnifeNews

Benchmade has finally folded the Mini SOCP, and the result is not the fixed blade with a hinge bolted on. The new Mini SOCP Folder keeps the Greg Thompson DNA โ€” Thompson designed the Special Operations Combatives Program that the entire SOCP line is named for โ€” but it rebuilds the knife around a 3.76-inch spear point in S30V and a stack of user-configurable parts.

The first thing worth flagging is the name. "Mini" here is relative to the fixed blade family, not to your pocket. A 3.76-inch blade puts this squarely in full-size tactical folder territory, the same bracket where most people expect a 4-ounce knife to do real work rather than pose. Benchmade lists the folder at 4.31 ounces with G-10 scales, which is honest for a knife with a steel backspacer option and a finger ring.

That configurability is the actual story. Benchmade ships the Mini SOCP Folder with three opening methods in the box โ€” a thumb disk, a thumb stud, and an Emerson Wave-style pocket hook that catches the corner of your pocket on the draw. You also get two backspacers: a standard one and one with a full finger ring molded in for the fastest possible presentation. The deep carry clip has its own small ring, a detail that reads like a nod to the fixed blade's ring-and-pinky retention grip.

Compare it to the fixed Mini SOCP and the trade-off is obvious: you give up the absolutely bombproof lockup of a full tang, and you gain the ability to carry a 3.76-inch spear point in a pocket without a sheath printing through your shirt. Compare it to the rest of the tactical folder market and the Mini SOCP's differentiator is not the steel โ€” S30V is a 2001-era powder metallurgy recipe that has been thoroughly surpassed on paper โ€” but the parts kit. Very few production knives let you swap between Wave, disk, and stud deployment without buying three knives.

Verdict: this is a sensible, slightly expensive answer to a specific question โ€” how do I carry SOCP ergonomics without a belt sheath? The S30V and the price will keep steel chasers away, and that is fine. The people who buy this knife are buying the ring, the Wave, and the training lineage, and Benchmade delivered all three. It is available now at authorized dealers.
