Bestech's Duoz Puts Damascus and Olive Wood on an Ostap Hel Design

BestechNovember 1, 2026Source: Bestech

Damascus and wood is the oldest combination in the knife world, and it is also the easiest to get wrong. Done badly, you get a knife that looks like a gas-station souvenir. The Bestech Duoz BG65G avoids that by keeping the proportions restrained and letting Ostap Hel's design do the work.

The numbers are slim. Overall length is 7.55 inches, closed length 4.21 inches, blade length 3.34 inches, and the blade stock is 2.4mm, or 0.094 inches. The whole knife weighs 54.5 grams, which is 1.92 ounces. Those are gentleman's-folder dimensions: thin enough to sit flat in a jacket pocket, long enough to actually cut something, and light enough that you forget it is there.

The blade is pattern-welded Damascus with an acid etch, which darkens the layers and gives the contrast that makes the material worth looking at. The honest caveat with any Damascus at this price is performance: pattern-welded steel is a mix of alloys chosen for contrast rather than edge retention, and it will not hold an edge like S35VN or MagnaCut. Expect to touch it up more often, and do not use it on anything that requires a thin, stable edge.

Olive wood is the better half of the pairing. It is dense, stable, naturally oily and takes a warm finish that improves with handling, and it does not need the stabilization that softer woods do. Bestech runs ceramic ball bearings in the pivot, so the flipper action should be quick despite the light blade.

At $69.90 the Duoz competes with the nicer Civivi and Kizer wood-handled models, and it wins on materials per dollar while losing on steel performance. Verdict: buy it as a dress knife or a gift for someone who wants a knife that looks handmade; skip it if you need a knife that survives a job site, because Damascus and thin stock are not a work combination.
