CIVIVI ELITE's Penumbra Is a 2.92-Ounce S35VN Wharncliffe

CIVIVIOctober 22, 2026Source: CIVIVI

The ELITE line is CIVIVI's answer to the complaint that the brand's knives are good values but not quite premium objects. The Penumbra makes that argument with a number instead of a marketing paragraph: 2.92 ounces for a 3.44-inch blade in a titanium frame.

The spec sheet is unusually thin for the blade length. Overall length is 7.99 inches, closed 4.55 inches, blade thickness 0.09 inch, handle thickness 0.35 inch, and the weight is 82.9 grams. That is a knife built like a scalpel, and the wharncliffe profile โ€” a straight edge running to a low point โ€” matches the build. Steel is CPM S35VN at 58-60 HRC, flat ground, black stonewashed, with a top liner lock and 6AL4V titanium handles.

The comparison that will decide most purchases is against the budget CIVIVI catalog. An Estoc gives you a 4.1-inch Nitro-X7 blade for $87. The Penumbra costs $174 โ€” roughly double โ€” and gives you less blade, better steel, titanium instead of G10, and a 0.4-ounce weight advantage despite the metal handle. If you cut once a day, the Estoc is the better deal. If you carry in dress trousers or a shirt pocket, the Penumbra is the one that disappears. Two structural notes on the Penumbra. First, a top liner lock means the lock bar is a steel insert in a titanium handle, so the interface that wears is a hardened liner rather than the frame itself โ€” cheaper to replace, and it keeps the handle thin at 0.35 inch. Second, 0.09-inch blade stock is thin enough that lateral pressure should be respected. This is the knife you hand someone to open a package, not the one you hand them to pry a staple out of a crate.

The wharncliffe is the caveat. A straight edge is superb for draw cuts, tape, and opening packaging, and poor for anything that needs belly: skinning, rocking through a pile of vegetables, carving. This is a box-and-envelope knife with premium materials, not a camp knife.
