CIVIVI's Chronic Weighs 2.5 Ounces for $57

CIVIVIOctober 30, 2026Source: CIVIVI

Seventy-one grams for a three-and-a-quarter-inch blade is the kind of number that usually comes with a plastic handle and a $30 price tag. The CIVIVI Chronic C917A does it with gray G10 and 9Cr18MoV for $57.

The measurements: 7.32 inches overall, 3.22-inch blade, hollow grind, satin finish, 0.12 inch stock, 4.10 inches closed, 0.47-inch handle thickness, 2.50 ounces, G10 handle and backspacer, stainless liners, caged steel ball bearings, tip-up reversible clip.

9Cr18MoV is the steel you find on $40 knives, and it is honest about what it is: a Chinese stainless in the same family as 440C, with decent corrosion resistance, moderate edge holding and the easiest sharpening of anything in CIVIVI's catalog. That last point matters more than the spec sheet suggests, because a 71-gram knife is a knife you will actually carry and therefore actually use, which means it will need touching up far more often than a safe queen. On a 71-gram knife the steel choice makes sense โ€” you are not going to pry with this, so you do not need toughness, and you will sharpen it often enough that ease matters more than wear resistance.

Hollow grind on thin stock over a light frame is a slicer by construction, and the flipper on caged steel bearings will be faster than the price suggests. The trade is in the liners: steel rather than titanium, which is why the knife is cheap and also why it will feel slightly less stiff than a $100 folder. Against the Asticus at $70, the Chronic is $13 less, 4.3 ounces lighter and 0.58 inch shorter โ€” for pocket carry it wins outright. Against the Lazar at $110 you give up Damascus and brass for 1.87 ounces of weight saving.

Verdict: the best cheap light folder CIVIVI currently lists, and a good first knife for someone who wants to stop noticing it is there. Skip it if you want a steel that holds an edge through a shift โ€” 9Cr18MoV needs attention.
