CIVIVI's Elite Penumbra Is an 82-Gram S35VN Titanium Folder
CIVIVI's Elite line exists to answer a simple question: what does the company build when it stops worrying about the $60 price ceiling? The Penumbra's answer is a 3.44-inch CPM S35VN wharncliffe in a titanium frame that weighs 82.9 grams.
The sheet: 7.99 inches overall, 3.44-inch wharncliffe in CPM S35VN at 0.09 inch stock and 59-61 HRC, flat grind, gray stonewash. The handle is 6AL4V titanium at just 0.35 inch thick with a matching titanium backspacer and clip, thumb studs in stainless steel, a Top Liner Lock, and caged ceramic bearings. 2.92 ounces total.
That 0.09-inch blade stock is the most interesting number here. Thin stock plus a flat grind plus a wharncliffe's straight edge makes a knife that cuts like a much larger one and carries like a small one. S35VN is an older powder steel in 2026, but at 59-61 HRC with thin geometry it holds a fine edge well, and it is tougher than its reputation suggests. The Top Liner Lock puts the release on the spine side, which keeps the show side clean and makes the lock ambidextrous in practice.
Compare with the Estoc at $99.70: the Penumbra costs $74 more, gives up 0.66 inch of blade and 0.66 ounce of weight, and buys titanium, S35VN and a lock that will not bite your thumb. Compare with a WE Knife Tiercel at $260: the Penumbra saves $86, loses MagnaCut, and matches the weight almost exactly. Between those two, the WE is the better steel and the CIVIVI is the better value.
Verdict: the most refined folder CIVIVI sells under $200. Thin S35VN, a 0.35-inch titanium frame and 82.9 grams is a genuinely good carry package, and the wharncliffe blade does the work. This is the CIVIVI to buy if you want one knife rather than a collection.
