How Often Is It Normal to Buy a Knife? The Community Answers
The question sounds trivial and is not: how often do you buy a new knife? A poster on r/knifeclub asked it carefully, prefacing that they did not want to imply there is a normal and abnormal rate, then reported back that they had received a lot of opinions and were reading every one.
The answers in these threads always split into three camps. The first buys constantly โ a knife every few weeks โ and describes it as collecting rather than buying. The second buys once or twice a year and treats it as a considered purchase after months of reading. The third buys in bursts: nothing for a year, then five knives in a month, usually after a show or a sale.
What nobody says out loud is that the rate is set by budget, not by taste. A person who buys a $40 CJRB every month spends less than a person who buys one $600 Koenig a year. Knife collecting is unusual in how wide that spread is, because the budget tier has gotten genuinely good: 14C28N, Nitro-V and D2 at 60 HRC are now available for the price of a dinner, and the difference between a $50 knife and a $150 knife is smaller than it has ever been.
There is also a saturation effect that experienced collectors mention and new ones discover. Once you own twelve knives, the thirteenth has to solve a problem the other twelve do not. That is when the buying slows down and the selling starts, and it is why the r/Knife_Swap listings are full of knives purchased eighteen months ago with a note about being carried twice.
The useful version of the community's answer: buy when a specific knife solves a specific problem, and stop when you cannot articulate what the new one does that the old ones do not. Any rate that follows that rule is normal.
