'Is 3 Knives Enough for a Tuesday at the Office?' r/knives Takes On Carry Overkill
Carry culture has a self-awareness problem and a sense of humor about it, sometimes simultaneously. Two r/knives posts this week leaned into the latter. One asked whether three knives is enough for a Tuesday at the office, or whether a backup axe is warranted. The other titled itself a "desk warrior" carry and asked outright: be honest, how much of your daily EDC is overkill for your routine?
The lists inside the jokes
The satire has real substance underneath. The backup-axe post lists a Spyderco with a tactical Wharncliffe profile described as reserved for "surgical strikes against reinforced" cardboard, which is closer to the truth than most gear reviews. The desk warrior post itemizes CPM-S30V for package tape, 154CM on a Leatherman Charge+ for "tougher package tape," a heavy brass pen for signing package receipts and, as the punchline, a knife justified by the Ziploc bag it opens.
Both threads land on the same observation: the hardware is chosen for contingencies that do not occur, which is exactly how most enthusiasts justify the fourth knife, the heavier light and the second multitool.
Why it resonates
The interesting thing is not that people over-carry โ it is that the community has decided it is fine. Nobody in the threads argues that a $200 folder is required to open envelopes. The consensus is closer to the truth of the hobby: the objects are collected because they are well made, and the utility claims are partly a story that justifies the purchase.
That is a healthier state of affairs than the alternative, where every carry photo must be defended on tactical grounds. Tool selection on a workday is dominated by weight, pocket space and how often you actually cut something โ which for most office workers means a $40 knife with a steel that stays sharp and a decent clip.
Verdict
The honest carry for a desk job is one knife, one light and a phone, with a multitool if you fix things. Everything past that is either a preference or a collection, and there is nothing wrong with either. The threads are funny because the joke is recognizable, not because anyone is doing it wrong. If your EDC has three blades and you work at a keyboard, you already know which one you actually use.
