Is a $200 WE Knife Magnacut Redundant Next to a Vosteed Raccoon Ti?
A question on r/knifeclub gets at the most common form of knife buying regret: not whether a knife is good, but whether it is different enough from the one already in your pocket to justify the money.
The setup: the poster already owns a Vosteed Raccoon in topo-pattern titanium with a 154CM blade, both slim and light. The knife under consideration is also slim and light, comes in MagnaCut, and would run about $200 shipped with a free QSP knife thrown in as a promo. The stated worry is redundancy, and the second worry is whether the model is actually decent. Both are fair.
Start with the steel question, because that is the real decision. 154CM is a proven, tough, corrosion-resistant stainless that sharpens easily and holds a working edge well enough for daily tasks. MagnaCut is the current benchmark for balanced performance, with substantially better edge retention and near-stainless corrosion resistance while remaining reasonable to sharpen. Going from 154CM to MagnaCut is a genuine upgrade, but it is an upgrade you feel when you cut a lot of abrasive material, not when you open mail. If your 154CM knife gets touched up on a strop every couple of weeks, the new steel will mostly buy you maintenance intervals.
Then the redundancy question, which is geometry rather than steel. If both knives are slim, light, titanium and similar in blade length, they compete for the same slot in your rotation, and the loser sits in a drawer. One of them will get carried and one will not, and it is usually the older one. The WE model that fits the description of a slim, light MagnaCut titanium folder in the $200 range is the Elementum at $217.60, a 2.96-inch MagnaCut blade in a titanium handle. Two slim titanium folders in the same blade-length neighborhood is one more than most people carry.
Verdict: buy it if you want a dedicated MagnaCut knife and will actually rotate the Raccoon out sometimes. Do not buy it if the Raccoon is your daily and the new knife would be a spare, because you would be paying $200 for a second copy of a role you already filled.
