Kansept's Ptarmigan Is a 3.83-Ounce Titanium Frame Lock From Jared Price
Kansept has a habit of shipping knives that look more expensive than they are, and the Ptarmigan is the latest argument for that reputation. Designed by Jared Price and catalogued as the K2055, this is a 3.12-inch frame-lock flipper that lands at 7.2 inches overall and just 3.83 ounces — numbers that put it squarely in the pocketable-everyday-carry bracket rather than the heavy-duty tactical one.
Price's stated brief was a knife that moves between jobs without complaint. The company's own description frames the Ptarmigan around the rock ptarmigan, the arctic bird that survives conditions that kill most everything else, and the design follows that logic: one knife that opens mail at a desk, cuts rope in a truck bed, and still feels at home in a pack on a weekend hike. The drop point blade is deliberately generous in belly while keeping enough tip control for detail work, and the flipper tab is meant to be used one-handed without looking.
The interesting part is where Kansept spends the money. Beneath the blade, every Ptarmigan variant is built on a titanium frame, then dressed in one of several premium finishes. The flagship K2055A1 pairs a blackwash titanium frame with Timascus inlays and a black mirror DLC CPM S35VN blade at $319.89. The K2055A3 steps to purple crystallized titanium at $221.89, and the K2055A4 combines bead-blasted titanium with Arctic Storm FatCarbon at $199.89. All three run the same 3.12-inch CPM S35VN drop point and the same frame lock.
That spread matters more than it looks. Timascus and crystallized titanium are cosmetic upgrades, not performance ones, so a buyer choosing between the three variants is really choosing between $200 and $320 worth of visual identity. For anyone who intends to actually cut things, the FatCarbon version does the same work for $120 less; for collectors, the Timascus piece is the one that will hold attention on a shelf.
Kansept lists all three Ptarmigan variants as in stock and shipping from its US store. If the goal is a sub-four-ounce titanium frame lock that does not require a $400 commitment, this is one of the more convincing entries of the fall.
