Kansept's Ptarmigan Moves Into Crystallized Titanium at $221.89

KanseptSeptember 26, 2026Source: Kansept Knives

Kansept's Ptarmigan was designed by Jared Price around the idea of a knife that could move between pocket carry, work tasks and trail duty without apologizing for any of them. The newest frame-lock variants push the handle materials into crystallized titanium and FatCarbon while keeping a 3.12-inch CPM S35VN blade.

The K2055A3 combines a blackwashed titanium frame with purple crystallized titanium and a flipper opener at $221.89. The K2055A4 goes to beadblasted titanium with Arctic Storm FatCarbon at $199.89. Both share the core platform: a 3.12-inch drop-point blade in CPM S35VN, a 7.2-inch overall length, 3.83 ounces — about 108 grams — and a refined flipper that Kansept describes as snappy and consistent one-handed opening.

The geometry is the part worth thinking about. A 3.12-inch drop point in this frame weight splits the difference between a dedicated work knife and a pocket knife: long enough to cut through cardboard in a single pull, short enough to reach for detail work, and thick enough in the spine to take some pressure. CPM S35VN is a proven stainless with strong corrosion resistance, good toughness and edge retention that comfortably beats the D2 and 14C28N knives at half the price. It also sharpens more easily than high-vanadium alternatives, which matters on a knife designed to be used rather than displayed.

The choice between the two new variants is aesthetic and financial. Crystallized titanium is a heat-treated surface that produces a crystalline pattern in the metal itself, so no two handles are identical; FatCarbon is a layered carbon-fiber composite with a directional pattern and lighter weight. The FatCarbon model is also $22 cheaper. The existing K2055A1 at $319.89 adds Timascus and a black mirror DLC blade for buyers who want the most dramatic finish in the family.

Verdict: the K2055A4 at $199.89 is the best value of the three because FatCarbon does the same job as crystallized titanium for less, and both share the S35VN blade that does the actual cutting. Buy the A3 if you want metal, the A1 if you want the showpiece.

Kansept lists these as in-stock variants — check current K2055 finish availability and pricing before ordering.
