Kansept's Qilin Puts a Recurved Tanto Ahead of Familiar Specs

KanseptSeptember 25, 2026Source: The Gadgeteer

Most folders are bought on specification and then judged on shape. The Kansept Qilin T1047T1 inverts that order. Kansept lists a familiar set of materials here, but the reason to look at this knife is the profile, and the profile is the one thing a spec sheet cannot evaluate for you.

Kansept calls the blade a tanto, which is technically fair without capturing it. The edge runs inward before it curves, giving the silhouette a recurved read as it turns toward the tip โ€” closer to a sweeping cutter than the chisel-straight tanto most buyers picture. The blade is 3.43 inches of 154CM with a blackwash finish, the pragmatic steel choice for this class: keen edge, good stain resistance, and easy touch-ups on a pocket stone. The recurve is the tradeoff. A straight edge sits flat on a bench stone; a recurved edge wants a rod system or a narrow stone, and it will collect more attention over the life of the knife.

Around that blade Kansept uses a carbon fiber and G10 handle, a flipper tab for deployment, and a liner lock. Overall length is 7.99 inches and the knife weighs 3.43 ounces, light enough to disappear in a pocket without feeling hollow in hand. Ostap Hel is credited as the designer, which matters more than usual here because the Qilin's identity is entirely geometric. Hel's folders tend to read as one continuous drawn line, and this blade-and-handle relationship follows that logic.

Next to a conventional drop-point EDC of the same weight, the Qilin asks you to accept a tip that is less versatile and a knife that draws comments. Next to a classic tanto, it offers more usable belly and a more forgiving edge. Neither comparison resolves the question on paper, and the opening mechanism โ€” flipper and liner lock โ€” is deliberately conventional while all the design risk sits forward of the pivot.

Verdict: the Qilin is a design purchase rather than a specification purchase. Buyers who want quiet utility should stay with drop points at this weight. Buyers who already like recurved blades will find one of the more deliberate shapes Kansept has released this season.

Kansept folders move through specialty retailers quickly โ€” check current Qilin T1047T1 stock before the blackwash run sells through.
