The Sheepdog is Kizer's most recognizable shape and the cheapest way into it is now the Mini C01C V3488ED at $41.40: a 2.63-inch cleaver in brown Micarta, 3.17 ounces, 6.18 inches overall.
The numbers are simple: 154CM blade at 0.11 inch stock, satin finished, Micarta handle, liner lock, tip-up clip, thumb-stud deployment, 3.17 ounces. Kizer copy for this one is unusually plain about what the knife is for: cutting tasks, smooth opening, grippy handle, and an edge that arrives razor sharp. There is no designer credit and no marketing story, which for a $41 knife is fine.
What you get from a cleaver this small is a specific kind of usefulness. A straight, tall edge with a squared tip is the best geometry for cutting against a surface: it does not rock, it does not wander, and the tip can be used to score tape without diving into the box. It is also the best geometry for shaving material off a flat face. What it cannot do is pierce anything, and a 2.63-inch blade with 0.11 inch stock has too little length to compensate for the missing point.
Micarta at forty-one dollars is a good sign. It is more expensive than G10 to make well and it does not scuff the way anodized aluminum does, and it grips better when your hands are wet. The trade is that Micarta can stain โ oil, blood, and dark dust all leave marks โ and that staining is permanent, though most people find it characterful rather than damaged after a season.
Compared with the Microlith at $104.30, this is the same brand's answer to a small knife for a third of the money, with less steel performance and a much less refined build. Compared with the Begleiter at $41.30, you get the same price and the same steel in a shorter, wider, more specialized shape. Compared with a Civivi Mini Praxis at $37.35, CIVIVI gives you less blade height and a more conventional point.
Verdict: buy it as a second knife for box opening and utility work, or as a first knife for someone who cuts more than they pierce. Skip it as an only knife, because the day you need to make a hole, a squared tip is a bad teacher.
