Kubey's Carve Is a $60 Chisel-Grind Tanto in D2

KubeyNovember 3, 2026Source: Kubey

Chisel grinds divide knife people the way pineapple divides pizza opinions. The Kubey Carve KB237A commits to one: a 3.27-inch tanto point in D2, bead-black finish, chisel grind, 0.12-inch stock, liner lock, caged ceramic bearings, G10 handle, 4.69 ounces, $60.

Overall length is 8.03 inches with a 4.67-inch handle and a 0.51-inch handle thickness, so this is a substantial folder for the money. The blade is 1.06 inches wide at the flat, which is wide for a 3.27-inch blade and gives the tanto its blocky, purposeful look. The grind is single-sided, which means the edge bevel exists on one face only and the other face is flat stock.

What a chisel grind does well: it produces an extremely acute edge angle on one side, it is trivially easy to sharpen because you only work one bevel, and it excels at push cuts and scoring. What it does badly: it steers in deep cuts, since the asymmetric geometry pushes the blade away from the flat side, and it leaves a rougher finish on the cut face. For opening boxes, cutting straps, and scoring drywall, none of that matters.

The comparison stack is crowded at $60. Kubey's own Hippocam fixed blade is $50, and the Harpy liner lock runs in the same band with a hawkbill profile. Against a CIVIVI Brazen, the Carve gives up a conventional grind and gains a heavier frame and a tanto. Against a Kershaw Leek, the Carve is twice the weight and much more of a work knife.

Verdict: a $60 beater with a chisel-ground tanto that will handle utility work without complaint. If you cut a lot of banding and cardboard and you like a tanto, this is a lot of knife for the money; if you carve wood, buy something with a symmetric grind instead.
