'Love Benchmade, Hate the Price' Is the Whole Budget Case
The most persuasive budget argument is not made with specs. It is made by someone who used to own the expensive thing, lost it, and then found something cheaper they preferred. An r/knifeclub post this week does exactly that: after losing a long-owned Benchmade 940, the owner picked up a Vosteed Porcupine TiSlim in S90V and now says it beats the knife it replaced, including knives costing twice as much.
The details give the claim weight. The poster has owned Spydercos, Benchmades, Kershaws, SOGs and Microtechs, so this is not a first-knife opinion. The comparison drawn against a $300 Osborne is specific, as is the observation that the TiSlim held up through camping and fishing trips rather than just pocket duty. The reasonable reading is not that Vosteed makes objectively better knives, but that the incremental quality per dollar flattens out well before $300.
The one concession in the thread is the honest part. The owner credits the price premium with paying for a warranty, and says that is basically it. That is the correct framing for the whole budget-versus-premium conversation: you are buying support, provenance and resale value, not cutting performance. Whether that is worth double is a decision about risk tolerance.
The caution is standard for any single-owner report. Titanium and S90V at this price point involve real compromises, usually in lock refinement, edge geometry heat treatment and support infrastructure. A knife that is excellent on a camping trip is not automatically excellent after two years of hard use.
Verdict: the 940 comparison has been made a thousand times, but the framing here is right. If you are paying a premium, pay it knowingly for warranty and peace of mind, not because cheap knives cut badly.
It is also worth remembering that the knife you replace an expensive favourite with is judged against a memory, and memories do not have lock rock or a dull edge.We earn a commission if you make a purchase through these links, at no extra cost to you.
