Someone's First Spyderco Arrived and They Think They Are Done Buying Knives

SpydercoOctober 3, 2026Source: r/knives

There is a specific genre of post that appears on r/knives almost weekly: the grail arrived, the buyer is thrilled, and the buyer announces that they will be done buying knives for a little while. A first Spyderco makes the announcement memorable because the pattern is so predictable.

The post itself is short and sincere. A grail knife arrived, the poster is stoked, and the verdict is that this folder is hard to beat. There is no model listed in the text and no comparison offered. What makes it worth reading is what it represents: the moment a buyer shifts from accumulating budget knives to committing to one more expensive knife, and the discovery that the expensive knife does not eliminate the category.

That is the part experienced collectors find funny, and it is not condescension. The first genuinely good knife changes your standard. It raises the floor for what you are willing to carry, which means the next purchase has to clear a higher bar, not a lower one. It also reveals what the previous knives were doing wrong, usually in ways that are hard to articulate: pivot smoothness, lock-up feel, blade centering, how the handle disappears in the pocket. Once you can feel those differences, every knife you own gets re-evaluated. Most people then sell a few and buy a few more, which is the actual shape of the hobby.

The honest comparison is between the announcement and the outcome. The announcement is always the same, and the outcome is usually a rotation change rather than a stop. Nobody needs more than two good folding knives: one to carry and one spare. What people are buying past that point is variety of experience, which is a legitimate purchase if you can afford it and a bad one if you are doing it on credit.

Verdict: to anyone who just received a first premium folder, the useful advice is to carry it for a month before buying anything else. Most of what you learn in that month changes the next purchase for the better, and it prevents the classic mistake of buying three knives in one week that all fill the same role.
