The Casio-and-Vosteed Carry Taking Over r/EDC

VosteedOctober 23, 2026Source: Reddit r/EDC

An r/EDC post titled '#tgif Casio World Timer and Vosteed Raccoon' is a two-item carry, and it says more about where everyday-carry culture has landed than any thread full of $400 titanium.

The Casio World Timer is the cheapest legitimate world-time watch you can buy, and it has been in continuous production for decades. The Vosteed Raccoon is the brand's entry-level crossbar-lock folder, the knife that established Vosteed as a value brand before the Vanchor Lock and the TiSlim line existed. Neither item is aspirational. Both are chosen because they work, they are cheap enough to replace, and they do not require care. The watch half of that carry deserves a note too. Casio's world-time module runs on a battery measured in years, resists water well enough for swimming, and has no service interval worth thinking about. That is the same proposition as a crossbar-lock budget folder, and it explains why the pairing keep showing up together in the subreddit's most-liked posts.

That is the direction r/EDC has moved. The subreddit still has its share of titanium and timascus, but the posts that get engagement are increasingly the ones where the total value of the carry is under a couple of hundred dollars and every item has a clear job. Vosteed's own catalog now runs from the $69 Marten 330 in 14C28N to the $309 Nymble in Elmax, and the Raccoon sits at the bottom of that ladder as the knife people actually recommend to newcomers.

There is a real argument in this. A watch that syncs to a time zone by pressing a button, and a crossbar-lock folder with a replaceable clip, will both still be working in five years, and neither will make you nervous about scratching it. The counter-argument is that a $69 Marten 330 in 14C28N with a top liner lock and metallic-finished liners buys you a noticeably better blade for the same amount of money as two or three budget knives you will not carry.

Both positions are defensible. What the thread actually demonstrates is that the carry world has stopped treating cheap gear as a compromise.
