This Benchmade Bailout Packs MagnaCut Into Just 2.7 Ounces
Benchmade's Bailout has always been the tactical sibling of the Bugout: same ultralight philosophy, stouter blade, more aggressive styling. The new 537BK-07 variant pushes both ends of that formula at once, adding MagnaCut steel and a burnt copper aluminum handle to a knife that still weighs in around 2.7 ounces.
MagnaCut is the interesting part. It is the steel the enthusiast community spent years asking for, balancing edge retention with corrosion resistance and enough toughness to survive real work rather than being babied. Putting it on a tanto blade is a deliberate pairing: tanto geometry already prioritizes tip strength and piercing over slicing finesse, so a tougher, more wear-resistant steel complements the profile instead of fighting it. The burnt copper handle finish also gives the knife a worn-in look straight out of the box, which is either a feature or a gimmick depending on your taste.
Compared with the standard Bailout, this version is a materials upgrade rather than a geometry change, and it is priced accordingly for buyers who want a light knife they can carry all day without noticing. Compared with the Bugout, the Bailout gives up some slicing geometry in exchange for a sturdier tip and a more aggressive presence. Compared with a full-size tactical folder, it gives up hand-filling grip in exchange for weight that effectively disappears in a pocket or waistband.
The verdict leans positive. At under three ounces with MagnaCut and an AXIS lock, this is close to the best weight-to-capability ratio Benchmade currently offers, and the finish differentiates it from the sea of black aluminum knives. The caveat is the same one that applies to every tanto: if your daily cutting is opening boxes and breaking down cardboard, a drop point will serve you better.
