Three Customized Spyderco Smocks and a Friendly Bet
A r/knives post takes the form of a friendly wager: three friends all bought Spyderco Smocks, customized them separately, and are now arguing about which one looks best. The three builds are a shipwrecked copper scale with a satin blade, a zirconium handle with a stone and acid wash finish, and textured micarta with a satin blade. The poster admits everyone thinks theirs will win.
The Smock is an unusually good candidate for this kind of group project for a specific reason: it is a Spyderco with a detent-based flipper and a compression-style lock, which makes it mechanically interesting but visually restrained. That leaves room for scales and finishes to do all the talking, and the aftermarket has responded with a huge catalog of options. Few mainstream production designs have as deep a modification ecosystem.
The three finishes shown represent the spectrum. Shipwrecked copper is a forced-patina treatment that produces blue-green oxidation, and it is the most assertive option โ it looks handmade and deliberately imperfect. Zirconium is at the opposite end: dense, dark, expensive, and understated, and it resists scratching better than titanium. Textured micarta is the practical choice, adding grip and durability without much money, which is why it remains the most common aftermarket scale material. Acid and stonewashing the blade is the one change that is purely about wear patterns rather than performance.
Compare the cost of these builds and the hobby's economics become clear. A stock Smock runs roughly $200, and titanium or zirconium scales plus a professional blade finish can add another $150 to $300 โ meaning a fully built example can cost more than a Chris Reeve. Buyers who want good materials and a distinctive look without the project should note that a Kizer or WE Knife titanium folder delivers comparable hardware finished properly for less money.
That said, the satisfaction of a group build is not something you can buy. If you want to start modding, pick a model with a deep aftermarket โ the Smock, the Para 3, and the Bugout all qualify. And if you would rather skip the project, the Kizer and WE Knife catalogs are the shortcut.
