Timex Puts a Helium Escape Valve on a $469 Deepwater Meridian 200 Automatic

TimexSeptember 15, 2026Source: The Gadgeteer

The helium escape valve is the most argued-about feature in dive watches. It exists for saturation divers who live in pressurized habitats and need a way to vent helium that has seeped into the case, and roughly none of the people who pay for one will ever do that. Timex has put one on a sub-$500 automatic anyway, and The Gadgeteer's September 15 look at the Deepwater Meridian 200 HEV makes clear that the rest of the specification list is what actually justifies the price.

Timex rates the watch to 200 meters of water resistance with a screw-down crown and screw-on case back, adds a ceramic bezel insert and a sapphire crystal, and powers it with a Miyota 8215 automatic movement - a workhorse Japanese caliber with a long service record. It comes in two 44mm versions: the TW3A01600 with a silver-white dial and stainless-steel bracelet at $499, and the TW3A01700 with a metallic blue dial and perforated HNBR synthetic rubber strap at $469.

Those are the materials buyers have learned to expect from a "serious" dive watch - sapphire, ceramic, screw-down hardware, an automatic movement - at a price where most brands are still using mineral crystal and a quartz caliber. The comparison that matters is against the established value divers: a Seiko 5 Sports or a Citizen Promaster costs less but typically brings mineral glass and less water resistance, while a Seiko Prospex or a Christopher Ward diver at $700 and up brings better finishing and a more refined bracelet at a price Timex is undercutting by hundreds.

The honest caveats are the ones the Gadgeteer raises: a helium escape valve is a feature most owners will never activate, and HNBR rubber - while more resistant to oils and UV than silicone - is still a strap, not a bracelet. At 44mm, this is also a watch that wears large on smaller wrists.

For a first mechanical diver, a beater with actual dive hardware, or a gift for someone who wants the look without the boutique markup, the $469 entry version is the one to buy. The valve is a conversation piece; the sapphire, ceramic bezel and Miyota movement are the parts you will appreciate in year three.
