WE Knife's Pending Hides Composite Resin in Titanium
Composite resin inlays are the most interesting thing happening in production knife handles right now, and WE Knife's Pending is a clean argument for them. Grey 6AL4V titanium on the outside, a multi-color resin inlay on the inside face, and a 3.29-inch M390 blade in the middle.
The spec sheet: 7.84 inches overall, 3.29-inch modified clip point in Bohler M390 at 0.13 inch stock and 59-61 HRC, flat grind, stonewash finish. The handle is 0.48 inch thick titanium with a composite resin inlay and a yellow, purple and blue topo pattern echoed on the backspacer, clip and pivot cap. Frame lock, caged ceramic bearings, right-hand tip-up carry, 100.5 grams. Dew Hara designed it.
What the resin buys you: color that titanium anodizing cannot produce, in a material that is stable and does not need care. What it costs is a softer surface on the show side and a more fragile edge where the inlay meets titanium. This is a knife that will look better in three years than a flamed titanium frame and will show pocket wear in a way a bead-blasted one will not. M390 at 59-61 HRC is the same steel WE uses across this tier โ high vanadium, strong edge retention, unremarkable toughness compared with MagnaCut.
Against the $350 Suisei, also Dew Hara, the Pending costs $37 more and trades the reverse tanto and carbon inlay for a modified clip point and a resin inlay. Both weigh 100.5 grams, both run M390, both use caged bearings. The difference is entirely aesthetic plus 0.01 inch of blade length. Against the $260 Tiercel, the Pending costs $127 more and loses the MagnaCut advantage โ so buy the Tiercel if steel is what you are paying for.
Verdict: a $387 flipper for people who buy knives the way they buy watches. The mechanism is WE's standard, which is to say excellent, and M390 in a titanium frame lock is a known good combination. If you want the most performance per dollar, this is not it. If you want the one that looks like nothing else in your case, it is.
