WE's Varg in Fafnir Damasteel Breaks the $675 Line

WE KnifeOctober 27, 2026Source: WE Knife

Damasteel's Fafnir pattern sits at the decorative end of pattern-welded steel, and WE has put it on the Varg โ€” a 2.96-inch clip point in a titanium frame lock, priced at $675.

Specifications: 7.12 inches overall, 2.96-inch clip point in Damasteel Fafnir at 59 to 61 HRC, 0.13 inch stock, flat grind, no additional blade finish since the pattern is the finish. Handle is 6AL4V titanium with multi-colour carbon fibre inlay, polished grey backspacer, polished grey titanium clip, pivot cap and screws, caged ceramic ball bearings, frame lock, 3.37 ounces (95.5 grams) at 0.5 inch thick, tip-up right-hand carry.

Fafnir is a Damasteel pattern โ€” a laminated Damascus built from two powder metallurgy stainless alloys rather than the carbon steels used in traditional pattern welding. That construction is why a Damasteel blade can hold 59 to 61 HRC and still show figure: the contrast comes from alloy difference, not from etching a soft carbon steel. It is genuinely stainless, unlike most Damascus, and it will not rust in a pocket. What it will not do is out-cut M390, because the layers interrupt the microstructure that gives a homogeneous powder steel its edge stability. Expect the cutting performance of a good mid-grade stainless, with a finish that nothing else matches.

The Varg's dimensions are the other half of the argument. A 2.96-inch blade at 95.5 grams with a 4.15-inch closed length is a small knife โ€” this is a pocket piece, not a work knife. The clip point with a flat grind at 0.13 inch will handle everyday cutting well, and the size means it is legal in more places than a four-inch folder.

At $675 the Varg is competing with small American custom and mid-tech knives, and that is a different argument entirely. WE's case is consistency: the same fit, the same lock geometry and the same Damasteel every time, without a two-year waitlist. The counter-case is that $675 buys a knife with a blade where the aesthetic is the primary function, and the multi-colour carbon fibre on the handle is a busy pairing with a busy blade.

Verdict: buy it if you want a small, genuinely stainless Damasteel folder with a titanium frame and you have already decided the pattern is worth the money. If you want a user, the plain MagnaCut Varg at less than half the price does the same job with better edge retention.
