Why the Convoy M21H Ended One Owner's Search for an Outdoor Light

ConvoyOctober 21, 2026Source: Reddit r/flashlight

The post reads like a parts list, which is appropriate for Convoy. The owner bought an M21H with a W5050SQ5 emitter in 4000K, a Linkdata P65 cell, the tactical switch, and both 12 and 24 degree total-internal-reflection optics to convert the light from its default 3-degree thrower configuration into something closer to a flooder. He added an S21E clip and a diffuser, and declared his search for a perfect all-around outdoor light finished, for now.

The configuration matters more than the model. Convoy sells host and emitter combinations that let a buyer pick the beam they want, and the M21H's swappable TIR optics are the practical expression of that: one body, three beam patterns. A 3-degree optic throws; a 24-degree optic lights a campsite. Most production lights lock you into one, and the ability to change it is why the budget-Convoy community treats these bodies as platforms rather than products.

The emitter choice is the other half of the equation. A 4000K neutral-white LED is the outdoor compromise: enough colour rendition to read terrain and identify objects, without the blue tint that makes cool white lights harsh in rain and fog. The owner notes the light is not high-CRI in the way an SFT-70 or a B35AM is, and argues that for real outdoor use it does not matter, because efficiency and sustained output matter more.

The replies confirmed the pattern with a different emitter. One buyer started with an LHP73B in 5000K, owned many lights since, and concluded the M21H was the one that worked, then ordered a second in 3000K. Others pointed out that an 18650 light is enough for a niche role, and that an S2+ or an S6 can serve as a bad-weather or spotting light without competing with the M21H's job. The suggestion to add a headlamp was the only real criticism.

The verdict is that the M21H is a strong choice for someone willing to specify an emitter and buy the optic they need. It is a poor choice for someone who wants to open a box and use a light. Buy the 21700 cell, decide between flood and throw before ordering, and add the diffuser if the light will pull campsite duty. Confirm stock, because Convoy configurations sell out and the popular emitter and optic combinations are the first to go.
