Artisan Cutlery's Tortoise Is a 3.7-Inch Titanium Oddity

Artisan CutleryNovember 4, 2026Source: KnifeInformer

Some knives are designed to be liked immediately and some are designed to be understood. The Artisan Cutlery Tortoise is in the second group. Reviewer Wayne Walter's first reaction on unboxing it was, in his words, “Oh, good lord, what have they done?” A few hundred cuts later he was calling it one of the wildest designs he had handled all year, and meaning it as a compliment.

The dimensions explain the reaction. Overall length is 8.74 inches, with a 3.7-inch blade and a 5.04-inch closed handle, on 0.150-inch stock. That is a large knife with a broad, slicey blade in S35VN and about 0.018 inches behind the edge on his sample — thin enough to cut aggressively, which is not what the chunky silhouette prepares you for. The handle is titanium with a frame lock on the off side.

What surprised him was the ergonomics and the action. There is a spacious grip and a thumb ramp that puts the hand where it needs to be, a front-flipper opening that he found genuinely enjoyable, and a large cutout that makes slow-rolling the blade easy. The detent held up on a heavy blade, which is the hard part of designing a front flipper. The one complaint is that the oversized cutout makes a middle-finger flick awkward.

Comparatively, the Tortoise sits in the same conversation as the big titanium framelocks from WE and Kizer: broad blades, frame locks, and a design brief that prioritizes presence over pocketability. Where those knives tend to be safe and familiar, this one is strange enough that it will either click with you instantly or never. The thin edge geometry is the part worth paying attention to, because it suggests the knife is meant to cut rather than to be photographed.

Verdict: buy it if you want a large, thin-edged S35VN folder in titanium and you are bored of the current design language. Skip it if a 5-inch closed handle does not fit your carry, or if you need a knife that disappears in a pocket rather than announces itself.
