'Chaparral 3.5 in K390': r/knifeclub Makes the Case for the Thinnest Backlock Spyderco Never Built

Sometimes the most revealing knife discussions start with a sentence and a half. A r/knifeclub member posted exactly that this week: he wants the slender Chaparral profile in a 3.5-inch blade with appropriate handle and choil, in K390. He noted that the Stretch line comes closest but is not the same thing. The thread that followed is a compact education in how Spyderco's catalog is put together and why some obvious gaps never get filled.

The core argument for the idea is that the Chaparral is arguably Spyderco's best-made backlock right now โ€” thin behind the edge, tightly assembled, and unusually refined for a production knife. Enthusiasts who value slicing geometry tend to own several. In the thread, one member reported owning three and liking them all, while still noting they are not as thin behind the edge as some alternatives. Another suggested that a redesigned Stretch 2 XL โ€” thinner, with a lower tip, better construction and a smoother action โ€” would get close to the fantasy, and speculated about TriAd lock geometry arriving in Spyderco's backlocks for more vertical stability.

The pushback was just as useful. One commenter pointed out that the proposed knife would have a different lock, different blade stock, a less tall blade and a different grind โ€” that is, at some point you stop asking for a Chaparral and start asking for a new model entirely. Others asked whether the Sage does not already cover the role; the reply came back that the Sage is riveted in its construction, which matters to buyers who want to disassemble and service their knives. And at least one skeptic observed that in actual cutting, the thinness difference between a Chaparral and a Manix is not noticeable unless you are going through multiple layers of cardboard at once.

That back-and-forth is the real value of the thread for anyone shopping: it separates marketing-adjacent preferences from properties you can actually feel. The Chaparral's advantage is geometry and refinement, not capacity. Spyderco has not announced anything resembling a larger Chaparral, and there is no reason to expect one โ€” the company's pattern is small, deliberate runs, and a 3.5-inch thin-stock backlock would compete directly with the Sage and Native lineages. Until then, the Stretch 2 and Sage 5 remain the practical answers, and Chaparral fans keep asking.
