Timex Adds Its First Automatic Day-Date to the Waterbury Heritage Line
Timex's Waterbury Heritage collection has spent roughly a decade producing some of the brand's classiest vintage-inspired watches, drawing on the company's origins as the Waterbury Clock Company. The newest addition does something the line has never done before: it adds an automatic day-date function, making it the first Waterbury Heritage model with either feature.
Everything else about the watch is deliberately pared back. Apart from the three-hand dial and the day-date window, there are no other complications or functions โ no GMT hand, no chronograph, no rotating bezel. That puts the Waterbury Heritage Automatic squarely in the dress-watch category, closer to a quiet everyday piece than to the motorsports- and travel-inspired models the line has favored.
The details are where the money shows. The dial is finished as a clean enamel disc, and there are two colorways: a blue dial set in a silver stainless steel case with a matching link bracelet, and a black dial with gold detailing on the markers and hands paired to a two-tone bracelet. The case measures 39 millimeters, which is the sweet spot for a watch meant to be worn daily by most wrists. An exhibition caseback shows the automatic movement at work, which is a first for this line as well.
Practical touches are better than the price bracket usually offers. The stainless bracelets use butterfly clasps and self-adjustable links, so resizing does not require a trip to a watchmaker, and the bracelets get quick-release spring bars for easy strap swaps. An anti-reflective double-domed K1 mineral crystal covers the dial, luminous hands handle low light, and water resistance is rated at 50 meters โ enough for rain, handwashing, and the occasional splash, but not swimming.
Pricing starts at $449, which places the Waterbury Heritage Automatic above the brand's quartz offerings and among the more expensive Timex pieces in the catalog. The comparison that matters is against the automatic dress watches it undercuts, most of which cannot match the enamel dial or the bracelet hardware at that number. It launches September 22.
