WE's Sine Wave Mystery Box Costs $415 and Ships Two Knives
Mystery boxes are a marketing device, not a knife feature, and it is worth saying that plainly before looking at WE's Sine Wave Mystery Box at $415. What you are buying is a 3.98-inch M390 flipper in flamed titanium โ plus one unspecified WE or CIVIVI model thrown in, chosen by the factory rather than by you.
The knife itself: 8.84 inches overall, 3.98-inch drop point in Bohler M390 at 59 to 61 HRC and 0.16 inch stock, flat grind, polished bead blasted finish, 4.86-inch closed, flamed and satin 6AL4V titanium handle with a polished bead blasted backspacer, stainless liner, nested liner lock, caged ceramic ball bearings, Damasteel pivot cap, tip-up right-hand titanium clip, 4.96 ounces (140.7 grams).
Four millimetres of stock on a four-inch blade is a heavy-grind knife. It will not be the slicer that a 0.10-inch folder is; it will shrug off lateral load, hold a stable edge bevel and feel substantial in the hand. Almost five ounces in a titanium frame is the expected weight at this size, and the flamed finish means every example looks different โ the colour is a heat and voltage effect, not a coating, so it will not chip but it will fade where your hand oils it.
The nested liner lock is the quieter technical detail. WE uses a stainless liner nested into the titanium frame rather than cutting the lock out of the frame itself, which lets the titanium scale stay full-thickness for stiffness while the lock bar stays thin enough to flex. It is a more expensive construction than a frame lock and a better one on a knife this large.
Now the box. A $415 price for a titanium M390 flipper is roughly what the knife alone would cost, so the free knife is either a genuine value or the margin is built into the number. WE has not published which models go into the pool, which means the free knife could be a $60 CIVIVI or a $300 WE. If you were going to buy the Sine Wave anyway, the extra knife is upside. If you are buying because a mystery box sounds like a deal, you are paying full price for one knife and gambling on the second.
Verdict: a good large titanium flipper with an honest weight and a serious steel, bundled with a gamble. Buy it for the Sine Wave, not the surprise. And if you want certainty about what lands in your hand, buy the knife on its own instead.
