ZT 0450CF vs 0350: Same Blade Length, 3.75 Ounces Apart
Two Zero Tolerance folders, both made in the USA, both with a 3.25-inch locking blade, and one weighs nearly three times what the other does. The 0450CF and the 0350 are the clearest illustration in the current market that blade length tells you almost nothing about how a knife will carry.
The 0450CF is Dmitry Sinkevich's design: a carbon fiber front scale over a titanium back that forms the frame lock, a hardened steel lockbar insert, and a manual flipper running on KVT ball bearings. The blade is CPM S35VN in a drop point with a black finish. Overall length is 7.4 inches, closed 4.1 inches, handle thickness 0.4 inch, and the published weight is 2.45 ounces. The clip is reversible for left or right tip-up carry. Price is $199.99. One more number that explains the gap: the 0450CF's handle is 0.4 inch thick and the 0350's is 0.5 inch, a difference you feel immediately in a front pocket. Zero Tolerance also lists both as US-made with American and global materials, so the price difference is not a country-of-origin story. It is a materials and mechanism story, and the 6.2-ounce figure is the price of the assisted action and the G10-over-steel construction.
The 0350 is Ken Onion's design and it approaches the same blade length from the opposite direction. The blade is CPM S30V with a recurve and a black PVD coating, the handle is textured black G10, and the opening is spring-assisted: you start the flipper, the spring finishes the job. It locks with a liner lock, carries on a four-position clip, measures 7.6 inches overall and 4.6 inches closed, and weighs 6.2 ounces. Price is $235.
That 3.75-ounce gap is the entire decision. The 0450CF disappears into a pocket and is the easier knife to carry every day; the 0350 fills a hand, tolerates gloves, and the assisted action is genuinely faster to deploy under stress. The 0350 also offers four clip positions against the 0450CF's single reversible tip-up setup, which matters for left-handed carry in the tip-down orientation.
S35VN versus S30V is close to a wash for most users, and both are well treated by Zero Tolerance. Buy the 0450CF for a light carry with a manual action, the 0350 for a heavy grip and assisted opening. Neither is the better knife; they are answers to different questions.
